Max Nicolas Jr

Max Nicolas Jr

12/10/1974

Born in Haiti

Resides in Everett, MA

I love weight training and I respond well with my symmetry and genetics. People in the gym always asked me if I competed in bodybuilding and that is why I started competing.

My family is very supportive and my inspiration comes from my success and I always want to improve and get better.

I have done a number of Musclemania shows, NPC, and I was a NABF Pro in 2001.

I train at many gyms but my main gym is East Shore Athletic Club in Revere, Massachusetts.

I use sports supplements creatine monohydrate from either EAS, MetRx, or Pinnacle. Glutamine from Prolab, Whey Protein from Elite, and weight gainer from Ultimate Nutrition.

I also use Vitamin B-complex, Vitamin C with rose hips, magnesium, calcium, arginine, carnatine, glucosamine, multivitamin, and fish oil.

Bodybuilding makes me more confident and everywhere I go people want to ask me questions about health and fitness due to how I look. I stay lean and in good shape all year long.

I really love winning shows – who wouldn’t it is fun to win but my main goal is to be established my competing against my self and improving each time. Competing takes discipline and success comes with lots of hard work.

Off-season I can pretty much eat anything I want due to my genetics and workouts. On the other hand when I start my contest diet I stick to it and don’t be surprised if I go to a restaurant with my friends and family and I bring my own food with me – that takes discipline and dedication.

I weight train 5 days a week on a 3 days on and one day off schedule and sometimes a 2 day on one day off schedule. I don’t do cardio off-season but I’m going to start year round.

I’m a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor and a Phys Ed teacher at a private high school. I love my job a lot first off because I’m very good at it but the most important I love helping people especially kids. I feel I get a chance to help kids get on the right path early and the earlier the better and sometimes they look up to me like a superhero and I want to teach them about eating healthy and exercising early in life.

My main goal is to make a good living for my family and continue to be a helpful person in whatever situation. I was always an active person in high school and I played volleyball and soccer as our national sport and at the age 13 I started doing martial arts and study Judo, Kickboxing and MMA full contact.

I started weight lifting when I moved to the US from Haiti in 1999.

I have a wonderful girlfriend that I’m going to marry someday and she does tremendous work helping me on and off-season. She loves me as a bodybuilder and that could be hard as the cooking is insane. I have two sons Sean and Frankie.

My main hobbies are watching TV, going to movies and playing play station videogames. I like movies as long as it is action films and in term of reading as long as it is fitness related and my favorite TV shows are the Shield and UFC.

Nickname: Tish

Age: 34

Birthday: 2/08/74

Birthplace: Newport, RI

Residence: Newport, RI

Height and Weight: 5'4" 112 contest weight 118 off season

Fitness has always been a huge part of my life. From the time I was 4 yrs. old I was always doing something whether it was dance, gymnastics or aerobics classes I was always moving. After having my 2 daughters and I feeling like I was in the shape of my life I thought why not take it to the next level and do something that you never thought was possible and that was to compete!

After looking online and through different fitness magazines I kept coming across Cathy Savage Fitness. I made and appointment and that's how I got started.

One of favorite fitness competitors is Dawn Butterfield, I think she's amazing!

I started competing in the fall of 2007. I did the FAP New York along with some local NPC shows. I started off the 2008 season with an NPC show in my area and then I did my first Fitness Atlantic show. After that I did my first national show. Fitness Universe in Miami.

I am still working with CSF. I've been working with Cathy and her crew a little over a year now and I'm very happy!

I workout at the Newport County YMCA in Newport, RI and also at Work Out World in Warwick, RI.

I take a multi vitamin everyday along with protein shakes.

I have achieved great results in the last year. I lost a couple of pounds but most of all I completely toned up my body. I have always been active and in shape but after changing my workouts and cleaning up my diet I saw some great changes and most of all I feel wonderful!

I can't imagine not having fitness as a part of my life. It's just what we do in our house. My husband and I are always at the gym and my girls are right there with us. They are doing gymnastic, dance, softball or swimming. I want them to know at a young age how important it is to be healthy and active.

I started out doing these shows because I felt like I put so much hard work into trying to look and feel my best why not bring it to the stage. After my first couple of shows I loved it. Everyone wants to be the best and would love to win the show and I'm no exception! I have a lot of things to work on before I ever get to that point but as long as I improve with each show I'll be happy!

My diets pretty clean. I eat 5-6 meals a day. Lots of protein, fruits and veggies. I try to drink a gallon of water a day. My favorite cheat meal is ice cream. I can't live without it!!!

I teach about 6-8 classes of group ex. a week. My classes are alot of cardio with light and heavy weight mixed in. When I'm not teaching I like to do about 30-45 min. of cardio and about 30-45 min. of heavy weight training and abs with every workout!

I'm a personal trainer and a group exercise instructor.

I just want to a great role model for my daughters. The see what I do and how hard I work. I love it when they have questions for me and want to try all of the stuff that I'm doing. My oldest who is 8 yrs. old already wants to be a fitness star. She loves watching all the routines!

I have been dancing since the age of 4. In high school on was on the dance team.

I want to thank my husband Gerry and my daughters Hannah who's 8 and Julia who's 5 for being so supportive. All of friends and family have been wonderful!

Whether they come to the shows to watch or they’re at home cheering me on!

I just love to hang with my friends and family!

Some days can be very long and the last that I want to do is workout but I after I get it don I always feel better! It definitely help when you have a great family to support you and help push you along!

As I stood on the stage

As I stood on the stage, waiting for
the result to be made on who would have the overall figure title, the
excitement and anticipation overwhelmed me. I knew this was the time
for me to earn my pro-card. The judges asked my opponent and I to leave
the stage while they made their decision. I prayed and reached out
spiritually to a close friend that passed away the prior year. She was
very supportive in all aspects of my life. I felt her close to me that
night. As the judges ask us to return to the stage, I felt my
excitement build and build. They get ready to announce the decision and
being my opponent's number also was thirty something, it seemed extra
long for the result. There it was number 37 was called and I felt my
heart quiver. It was as if I had an out of body experience on that
stage. My parents, my boyfriend, my coach and a few good friends were
there to support me along with my photographer, Tina Woods. I did it! I
did it! I did it! I saw all of my friends and family shoot up out of
their seats and it was all I could do to keep myself composed. Not only
did I win overall, as well as best presentation but I got my
pro-card!!!!!!
The day after the show I had a photo shoot with
Tina Woods on the New Jersey shoreline. She captured my excitement, my
spirit, my love along with my serious, seductive side. Every picture
Tina has produced, is an art form all on it's own. Tina has been with
me since my first competition so it was very fitting that she share
this wonderful moment with me. As usual, she took my breathe away.

This was my fifth show and my third year competing. I always placed
very well in my competitions and it kept my fire going. I was planning
on doing the OCB show earlier this year in March but disappointing news
came about when a hernia was diagnosed in January. I was extremely
upset but decided to just go with the flow and realize that maybe it
was meant for me not to do that particular show and just concentrate on
getting myself strong. I couldn't train for 8-10 weeks and it was very
frustrating. Just 2 weeks after surgery I walked into the gym hunched
over thinking I could start off slow and begin. Maybe, just maybe, I
could have a comeback and do March anyway. Well, needless to say, that
did not happen. Well, I took the time off, listened to my coach, Warren
Fahrenfeld, and came back a couple months later and got stronger.
Earlier in the year, prior to the hernia surgery, I had two other
ailments that came about that needed my attention. One of which was
hypertension. I was only 30 and had to begin taking medication to keep
it under control. My father had been on medication since he was in his
mid twenties so the genetic factor had taken over. A few months after
this finding I was then diagnosed with a chronic skin condition,
Lympathoid Papulosis. It is such a rare condition that its a one in a
million chance of anyone carrying it. Under the microscope it resembles
cells of that in Lymphoma. This was a very scary time in my life for me
especially waiting to hear a diagnosis. With all of the frightening
information thrown at me at the time, many thoughts go through your
mind. One of which was, am I 30 with what could possibly be a terminal
illness? Am I ever going to compete again?? This Pro-Card win is bigger
for me than anyone could possibly imagine. It is a scary thought to
think that in life when you have an activity, something in life so
important to you or scarier yet, someone so important to you be taken
away. From this moment on I looked at life completely different. This
is what made me decide to personal train full time and do something I
loved to do. You go around this world one time. I knew nothing was
stopping me from going professional at this sport. Nothing.

After a complete career change, my part time personal training turned
full time for the last 8 months to a year at Premier Fitness in Nanuet,
New York. My experience there has been wonderful and so are the people
that work together there. Warren (my coach) is the nutritionist/trainer
in the gym and he was the first person to approach me to start
competing when I was just a member there. At first I was skeptical but
eventually I gave in and agreed to try in March 2006. My first show was
an NBI Tri-State bodybuilding/Figure Championship and I placed 2nd in
my class. I was thrilled and have been hooked ever since. I did another
show three months later placed 2nd again. My next 2 shows one of which
was OCB in Baltimore, I placed 1st in all of my classes. Every
competition I did, my body was improving, I was gaining size and I
couldn't have been happier with my achievements. At this time I knew I
wanted to go Pro more than anything. I really turned my love for
training in the gym to a passion for this sport that I absolutely love.

I love to eat healthy, the diet is never an issue, well, almost never
an issue! But, the preparation and watching yourself sculpt your own
body is just amazing. I feel self fulfilled and plan on going to the
top! I love the fact that I inspire other people. That's another reason
I love to be a trainer. This field is extremely gratifying and if I can
inspire others to achieve their fitness goals, that's all I can ask for.

Besides my boyfriend, Jason, and my family, Warren is the best at what
he does from helping me sculpt my body through diet as well as mentally
keeping me focused. Premier Fitness is very supportive as well. Not
just my boss or co-workers but the members at the club are very
supportive and were very excited about me becoming an IFPA Pro.

I still can't believe it. My determination and goals will get me to
where I want to go. Nothing will hold me back because now I feel more
inspired than ever. I want my determination to help others feel
motivated and inspired as well.
Since I have been competing, I
have been helping other women with their stage presence as well as help
them prep for their own competitions. I find that when I'm not
competing myself, I still need to be involved so helping these women
out excites me as much as it does them. I can feel their excitement as
their competition nears and I motivate them along to be at their best.

I feel as if I have a new chapter in my life beginning for me. It feels
fresh and captivating and I am truly enjoying this moment along with an
M&M or two!!! LOL I never would have thought that I would be where
I am right now and I will keep moving up and forward. If you have the
will and determination, the hard work will pay off. It shows right here
because I'm an example of that. For others that can feed off of my
excitement, motivation, love and even my smile, gratifies me more than
you know. Keep pushing hard for what you want, no matter what it is.
I'll keep pushing and most importantly keep training hard!

Workout Tips for Women

Weights:

You should work 1 to 2 body parts per day with weights, and do 2 to 3 exercises per body part. 3 to 4 sets of 15 repetitions works well to tone muscle mass for a competition. Rest periods between sets should be @ 30-45 seconds. Weights should be done at least 4 days out of your workout week. This should take @ 20 minutes of your workout time.

Cardio:

I do not recommend anything but walking on the treadmill on an incline, when preparing for a competition. No classes, bicycles, or cross trainers will burn the calories that a workout on a treadmill will. Those other types of workouts also tend to build the areas of the body that most women don’t want to build; the buttocks and legs! Cardio should be done every day you have a workout, for a time period of 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Abdominals/Stretching:

Abdominals and stretching should be done with every workout. You should always stretch before and after the workout. Abdominal work can be done at any time in the workout. This portion of your workout should be @ 30 minutes, 20 minutes of abdominals and 10 minutes of stretching.

Sample Workout:

Day 1: Chest and Back, Cardio, Abs, Stretch, Walk in Shoes

Day 2: Legs, Cardio, Abs, Stretch, Walk in Shoes

Day 3: No Weights, Cardio, Abs, Stretch, Walk in Shoes

Day 4: Day Off

Day 5: Shoulders, Cardio, Abs, Stretch, Walk in Shoes

Day 6: Biceps and Triceps, Cardio, Abs, Stretch, Walk in Shoes

Day 7: No Weights, Cardio, Abs, Stretch, Walk in Shoes

**Take every 4th day completely off from a workout to let your body rest. After 2nd Day off, repeat the 7 day cycle.

4. With a wider than shoulder width grip - elbows straight out

5. Lower the bar to just under your chin

Recession Proof Your Approach to Selling Personal Training

How to Recession Proof Your Approach to Selling Personal Training

During any recession people are still spending money. They just may not be spending it in the same places they were when the economy is surging ahead. When you combine the fact most of North America is overweight and these people are desperate to lose weight, well, selling personal training still isn’t very hard if the correct approach is taken.
The following tips will help any personal trainer or personal training department stay profitable during a recession.

Sell them what they want
Again, people want to lose weight. Billions are spent each year by overweight people buying everything from diet pills to magic potions to personal training. And this is a fatal flaw with most personal training businesses. They fail to market the one true benefit people really, really want: weight loss.
For the most part, health doesn’t sell. In fact, some trainers might not like it, but most people couldn’t care less about their health until they lose it. So by selling people on personal training for weight loss fitness businesses will have a much easier time enrolling new members.
Also, trainers can “hide their medicine in their apple sauce” so to speak. People who hire a trainer and lose weight, build lean tissue and increase endurance see health benefits as a matter of course.

People have money
If a personal trainer has trouble asking for money it’s usually because the trainer themselves would never pay for the service. Plus, there’s also a good chance the trainer couldn’t even afford the service they are offering.
During a sales presentation there can be no lack of confidence whatsoever. Prospects see right through “experts” whose voices crack when the subject of money comes up. Or if their body language changes the prospect will notice. Many unconscious things are happening when closing a sale. And if the personal trainers negative beliefs about money or the service they offer manifest in any way, well there is a very good chance the sale will be blown.
People have and will spend money on the services they value. Personal trainers need to be sure they truly understand the value they provide and have no problem asking for money. Just because the business owner may be nervous about a recession doesn’t mean the prospect is.

Find the right emotions
People buy for emotional reason much more often than they do logical ones. Actually, it’s not even close. For example, what logical reason on Earth is there for a person to own a car like a Ferrari or Lamborghini? None. There is no logical or practical reason to own a 6 figure car. But there sure are a lot of emotional ones.
The same goes for selling personal training. The key, regardless of whether there is a recession or not, is to find the emotional reasons the prospect wants to hire a trainer. It will take some digging, but once they are found – and they always exist – the trainer need only focus on those throughout the presentation and the sale practically closes itself.

Fitness Model Michael Nicolas

Michael Nicolas

I enjoy going to the gym and getting on stage. Competing keeps me motivated to go work out even when I am tired. I want to feel like I accomplished something in my training and contests let me show it off.

My brother Max inspired me a lot. Watching my brother compete made me want to give this a try. I would also like to be featured in a magazine.

I did the model search at the Mr. Olympia in Vegas, an OCB show, WNBF Body Best, Fitness Atlantic and I’m planning to do Fitness Atlantic again.

Sometimes I train with my brother since he helps me a lot but I workout on my own mostly. My brother is the one that got me started and he is my motivation.

My brother and I go to the gym together and we compete in many of the same shows so we help each other to get better. We go to East Shore Athletic Club and it is convenient since it is only 15 minutes from where we live.

I use only a good multivitamin. I cannot have any protein powder as it makes me feel sick and I also have asthma and I’m afraid to take any supplements that may affect my health.

I feel much better now that I started doing cardio every day even though I did loose a little weight. Fitness makes me feel in daily life and I eat better and have more energy. It makes me more outgoing, more approachable and more talkative.

I wish I could keep up with a diet but with my daily activities sometimes I forget to eat. My favorite cheat meal is pizza on Sundays.

I go to the gym three times each week and do two-body parts and a half hour cardio. I don’t like to do heavy weights I like more reps as high as 20 each set.

My goal is me become a well=known eyewear designer and have a line throughout the world. I am a optician and a frame designer and I have my own line of eyewear called “sauvage eyewear” www.sauvageeyewear.com I enjoy designing eyewear it is my passion. I also like to ride motorcycles on my free time I am currently a general manager for an optical company.

I used to box for fun but know I just don’t have time for lifting and boxing so I stick with weight lifting. I never have excuses not to exercise and now I work long hours and have more responsibilities at work. After a long day of work I also spend time designing eyewear then going to the gym can be a stress reliever.

My favorite book is “Who got my cheese” it is about what some body needs in life and how you got to pursue it, it is a very good book. I love trance and reggae music and my favorite TV show is Project Runway. My favorite movie is Training Day as it shows you how to value life and live a happy and stress free life because any day could be your last. I like Victor Martinez and Nassar because I met both of them and they both had great sense of humor and fun people to be around but my idol is Max Nicolas Jr my favorite athlete!
